A360 Desktop Version Expiration. What it is and how to turn it off (if you want to)

A brief history:

A360 Desktop was designed to sit in the background on your PC to keep local copies of your A360 Drive files up to date. This is much the same as Google Drive or Dropbox in that you can install it as an application that will keep a folder up to date with your stored files. The system was quite effective but perhaps under-utilised in the wider Autodesk user community.



Autodesk has announced that they’ve decided to stop concentrating on the A360 Desktop app’. In practical terms it means that they are encouraging people to stop using the A360 Desktop application and for the time being, they can upload files to the A360 Drive using the web interface. This might seem a bit odd but Autodesk seems to be looking at the long term – my belief is that if they can incorporate the saving and access to the A360 Drive files directly through the software then this would mean a more seemless experience for the user.

Where to from here?

So when you get the warning above, you have 2 choices, either disable the software (uninstalling is not recommended in the Autodesk information pages) or install a newer version if you wish to keep using it in its current form. I am not sure how many users actually utilised A360 Drive through the Desktop Application so the first option may be the most salient and if you have never used the service and don’t plan on using it then this would be the option that I would recommend. If you are a CAD / BIM Manager and you want to prevent users from installing software then you’ll be interested in looking at this option too – assuming you haven’t already attended to it 😉

Option 1:

Stop A360 Desktop from starting when you sign into your computer:
In the system tray, right click on the A360 Desktop icon and click on “Preferences…”. Under “Application” uncheck “Start A360 Desktop when I log on to Windows”. This will disable the A360 Drive Desktop component from starting up when you start your computer. If you do not restart your computer the sync component will still be running and syncing files. Note that you can still sign into A360 Desktop in the desktop application and it will start A360 Drive Sync on your computer. “

In the long term, the A360 Desktop App’ is going to be retired so if you are someone who has found the service useful so perhaps keep an eye out at the https://a360.autodesk.com/a360-desktop/ webpage for an eventual announcement about where Autodesk plans to take it in the future.
