Revit 2018.3 – a new update – a portal to bigger things.

In case you haven’t seen it already, Autodesk have just released a new update for Revit 2018, 2017 and 2016.

Whilst the update for 2018 brings many bug fixes and a few stability fixes (especially to upgraded projects), there is a little bit more here than meets the eye.

At the bottom of the list of resolved issues there is a section that deals with improvements made to Revit and here we see:

“Added connection to Next Gen BIM 360 for cloud worksharing, which allows flexible access permissions for cloud workshared models within the same project.”

So what does that mean exactly? Well, Autodesk has been working behind the scenes to create a unified space that allows users to have a central source of information during the whole life of the project (design, construction and facility management). Up to this point, solutions to coordinate those stages of the AEC life cycle have existed but they have been in different “silos” with little or no flow over between them.

Up to now, the Design phase has been catered to by Collaboration for Revit that allows teams to work on the same project across the globe – this was great for high-trust scenarios but didn’t lend itself to a true multi-practice setup. The construction phase was catered to by Autodesk 360 Field – a solution that relied on Navisworks to manage the model and allowed for reporting, assigning tasks and clash reports – on mobile devices or the desktop. The final phase of Facility Management was catered to by Autodesk 360 Glue – this worked in a similar fashion to Field but was had workflows that revolved around the tasks associated with that task.

And now, moving forward, Autodesk has lifted the lid on a unified space that will offer these (and an ever increasing) tools called BIM 360 Design. It answers a lot of issues that were raised by users and allows team members from across different companies to work together. The BIM 360 Design space also offers greater insight into the model, the construction and the facility management processes. Furthermore, the BIM 360 Design space becomes a repository of AEC related data over the construction lifespan.

Unfortunately due to the different technologies involved, there is no way to migrate a C4R (Collaboration for Revit) project into this new space. You can save off the project and re-upload it to the new BIM 360 Design space though. Like any change there will be a process of adjustment and learning but the new technology has the necessary power and open nature to provide a framework going forward into the foreseeable future.
